Los Gigantes is situated on the west coast of Tenerife and is within the municipality of Santaigo del Teide. Los Gigantes is a holiday resort and although there are a number of high quality, luxurious hotels in and around the area, there is still an air of peace and tranquillity and the town has retained some of its traditional Spanish flavour. The name Los Gigantes means ’The Giants’ when translated from Spanish and the town gets its name from the 700 – 800 metre high volcanic cliffs that rise above the coastline. It has been said that this area of Tenerife tends to get the best all year round climate in all of the Canary islands.
Situated approximately 30 minutes drive from Los Cristianos and Las Americas, it is not that far from either of the better known, if not noisier, resorts of Tenerife and the Reina Sofia airport of the south is only approximately 40 minutes away. Some of the closer towns to Los Gigantes include the old fishing port of Puerto Santiago and the busy beach town of Playa de la Arena and although they all tend to be a little quieter, there are still plenty of things to do in and around the area such as tennis and bowling. Bars, restaurants and cafés adorn the streets of Los Gigantes as do some of the higher quality gift shops, although, it has to be said that there are a few not so high quality gift shops too…
Restaurants and bars cater for the many nationalities that frequent Los Gigantes, but as the town is so close to the sea there are obviously a number of Canarian restaurants serving fresh fish, Canarian potatoes or papas arrugadas as they are called in Spanish and mojo, the traditional sauce, either a hot chilli one – red in colour – mojo rojo or mojo verde which is green and made with coriander or parsley…a lot cooler than it’s red sister.
If you are looking for a holiday resort that has bars and restaurants and a low key night-life then this area could well be for you, if you are considering moving to Los Gigantes permanently, and feel that you would like to be more than a stones through away from the hustle and bustle of the noisier towns, then Los Gigantes is a very good option.
