Police will be strengthening their security measures today when the trial of murderer Deyan Deyanov starts here in Tenerife.
The trial will be held in front of a jury of 9 people in Santa Cruz where Deyanov will be tried for the murder of Jennifer Mills-Westley – pictured above – nearly 2 years ago in May 2011 in Los Cristianos.
He still denies the murder, where he hacked off the head of Mrs. Mills-Westley in full view of horrified customers in a Chinese gift shop and made off with her head running down the street in blood stained clothing.
This is one of the most vicious crimes ever committed in Tenerife and was the talk of the island for quite some time…and now with the trial starting, will once again be a hot topic of conversation in the bars and cafés of the island.
Deyanov will have been flown back from a high-security psychiatric unit in Seville, where he has spent much of the last 20 months under constant watch.
During the court case, the number of police in the court will be doubled and he will have 8 armed police officers guarding him and keeping order within the court itself.
Still having no memories of the attack, he has clearly not given a confession, which would have negated the need for the case to proceed. The court case will last a week and will obviously be a terrible experience for those that will need to attend, bringing back memories of the awful event.
The prosecution will only be able to seek a term of imprisonment in a high security hospital, as medical reports have stated that he is paranoid schizophrenic and being described as “Violently delusional” as such, he cannot be held criminally responsible for his actions.
The case will start today and a report on the final verdict will be reported here soon.
